Cold therapy, also known as cryotherapy, works on the principle of heat exchange. This occurs when you place a cooler object in direct contact with an object of warmer temperature, such as ice against skin. The cooler object will absorb the heat of the warmer object. Why is this important when it comes to cold therapy?

After an injury, blood vessels that deliver oxygen and nutrients to cells are damaged. The cells around the injury increase their metabolism in an effort to consume more oxygen. When all of the oxygen is used up, the cells die. Also, the damaged blood vessels cannot remove waste. Blood cells and fluid seep into spaces around the muscle, resulting in swelling and bruising. When ice is applied, it lowers the temperature of the damaged tissue through heat exchange and constricts local blood vessels. This slows metabolism and the consumption of oxygen, therefore reducing the rate of cell damage and decreasing fluid build-up. Ice can also numb nerve endings. This stops the transfer of impulses to the brain that register as pain.

Most therapists and doctors advise not to use heat right after an injury, as this will have the opposite effect of ice. Heat increases blood flow and relaxes muscles. It's good for easing tight muscles, but will only increase the pain and swelling of an injury by accelerating metabolism.

a better job at cooling the body than chemical or gel packs, because they last longer and are able to draw four times the amount of heat out of tissue. The important difference is that ice packs undergo phase change, allowing them to last longer at an even temperature, creating a more effective treatment. Most chemical or one-time-use packs and gel packs do not undergo phase change. They quickly loose their ability to transfer heat, limiting their effectiveness to reduce swelling. Their short duration of cold is not long enough to produce numbness, also reducing their ability to relieve pain.

Cold therapy should always be used as soon as possible after an injury occurs and continued for the following 48 hours at 15 to 20 minute intervals. Remember - if you hurt yourself, you need to ice!

Louisville Slugger baseball bats, the official bat of Major League Baseball, got their start in 1880. That's when little Bud Hillerich started work as an apprentice in his father's woodworking business, "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning." Mr. Hillerich had emigrated from Germany decades past, and had settled in Louisville to explore his path toward the American Dream. His business thrived, and he was able to employ his son, as well as 20 other local craftsmen and workers.

Bud Hillerich was a baseball player at the time, so Bud used the opportunity of his coffee breaks and off moments to make his own baseball bats. He got so good at the craft that he began to craft bats for several of his teammates, too.

There is some debate over which of these bats should be called the first actual Louisville Slugger. Some would even argue that Bud had nothing to do with his father's changing the course of his business, from everyday woodworking to the baseball bat world. But experts at the actual present day Louisville company agree that Bud Hillerich had some serious doing in involving his father's business in the baseball world.

And according to the company lore, the first official Louisville Slugger baseball bats came out in 1884. Bud created them for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning, who was a leader on the professional baseball team in Louisville for the American Association. The team name was the Eclipse.

As the legend goes, Bud was out watching his hero during a game on a crisp spring afternoon. The Old Gladiator was at the plate, when with one fell swoop the batter shattered his bat. Only seventeen at the time, but ever the brave entrepreneur, Bud marched down to his hero and offered to make him a bat.

Dating Yellow Pages - PPC Love and Dating oriented Search Engines.

There has been endless webmaster speculation and worry about the so-called "Google Sandbox" - the indexing time delay for new domain names - rumored to last for at least 45 days from the date of first "discovery" by Googlebot. This recognized listing delay came to be called the "Google Sandbox effect."

Ruminations on the algorithmic elements of this sandbox time delay have ranged widely since the indexing delay was first noticed in spring of 2004. Some believe it to be an issue of one single element of good search engine optimization such as linking campaigns. Link building has been the focus of most discussion, but others have focused on the possibility of size of a new site or internal linking structure or just specific time delays as most relevant algorithmic elements.

Rather than contribute to this speculation and further muddy the Sandbox, we'll be looking at a case study of a site on a new domain name, established May 11, 2005 and the specific site structure, submissions activity, external and internal linking. We'll see how this plays out in search engine spider activity vs. indexing dates at the top four search engines.

Ready? We'll give dates and crawler action in daily lists and see how this all plays out on this single new site over time.

* May 11, 2005 Basic text on large site posted on newly purchased domain name and going live by days end. Search friendly structure implemented with text linking making full discovery of all content possible by robots. Home page updated with 10 new text content pages added daily. Submitted site at Google's "Add URL" submission page.

* May 12 - 14 - No visits by Slurp, MSNbot, Teoma or Google. (Slurp is Yahoo's spider and Teoma is from Ask Jeeves) Posted link on WebSite101 to new domain at Publish101.com

* May 15 - Googlebot arrives and eagerly crawls 245 pages on new domain after looking for, but not finding the robots.txt file. Oooops! Gotta add that robots.txt file!

* May 16 - Googlebot returns for 5 more pages and stops. Slurp greedily gobbles 1480 pages and 1892 bad links! Those bad links were caused by our email masking meant to keep out bad bots. How ironic slurp likes these.

* May 17 - Slurp finds 1409 more masking links & only 209 new content pages. MSNbot visits for the first time and asks for robots.txt 75 times during the day, but leaves when it finds that file missing! Finally get around to add robots.txt by days end & stop slurp crawling email masking links and let MSNbot know it's safe to come in!

* May 23 - Teoma spider shows up for the first time and crawls 93 pages.

Rapid Fire Swing Trading

Site gets slammed by BecomeBot, a spider that hits a page every 5 to 7 seconds and strains our resources with 2409 rapid fire requests for pages. Added BecomeBot to robots.txt exclusion list to keep 'em out.

* May 24 - MSNbot has stopped showing up for a week since finding the robots.txt file missing. Slurp is showing up every few hours looking at robots.txt and leaving again without crawling anything now that it is excluded from the email masking links. BecomeBot appears to be honoring the robots.txt exclusion but asks for that file 109 times during the day. Teoma crawls 139 more pages.

* May 25 - We realize that we need to re-allocate server resources and database design and this requires changes to URL's, which means all previously crawled pages are now bad links! Implement subdomains and wonder what now? Slurp shows up and finds thousands of new email masking links as the robots.txt was not moved to new directory structures. Spiders are getting errors pages upon new visits. Scampering to put out fires after wide-ranging changes to site, we miss this for a week. Spider action is spotty for 10 days until we fix robots.txt

* June 4 - Teoma returns and crawls 590 pages! No others.

* June 5 - Teoma returns and crawls 1902 pages! No others.

* June 6 - Teoma returns and crawls 290 pages. No others.

* June 7 - Teoma returns and crawls 471 pages. No others.

* June 8-14 Odd spider behavior, looking at robots.txt only.

* June 15 - Slurp gets thirsty, gulps 1396 pages! No others.

* June 16 - Slurp still thirsty, gulps 1379 pages! No others.

Identity Crawler

So we'll take a break here at the 5 weeks point and take note of the very different behavior of the top crawlers. Googlebot visits once and looks at a substantial number of pages but doesn't return for over a month. Slurp finds bad links and seems addicted to them as it stops crawling good pages until it is told to lay off the bad liquor, er that is links by getting robots.txt to slap slurp to its senses. MSNbot visits looking for that robots.txt and won't crawl any pages until told what NOT to do by the robots.txt file. Teoma just crawls like crazy, takes breaks, then comes back for more.

This behavior may imitate the differing personalities of the software engineers who designed them. Teoma is tenacious and hard working. MSNbot is timid and needs instruction and some reassurance it is doing the right thing, picks up pages slowly and carefully. Slurp has addictive personality and performs erratically on a random schedule. Googlebot takes a good long look and leaves. Who knows whether it will be back and when.

Now let's look at indexing by each engine. As of this writing on July 7, each engine also shows differing indexing behavior as well. Google shows no pages indexed although it crawled 250 pages nearly two months ago. Yahoo has three pages indexed in a clear aging routine that doesn't list any of the nearly 8,000 pages it has crawled to date (not all itemized above.) MSN has 187 pages indexed while crawling fewer pages than any of the others. Ask Jeeves has crawled more pages to date than any search engine, yet has not indexed a single page.

Each of the engines will show the number of pages indexed if you use the query operator "site:publish101.com" without the quotes. MSN 187 pages, Ask none, Yahoo 3 pages, Google none.

The daily activity not listed in the three weeks since June 16 above has not varied dramatically, with Teoma crawling a bit more than other engines, Slurp erratically up and down and MSN slowly gathering 30 to 50 pages daily. Google is absent.

Linking campaign has been minimal with posts to discussion lists, a couple of articles and some blog activity. Looking back over this time it is apparent that a listing delay is actually quite sensible from the view of the search engines. Our site restructuring and bobbled robots.txt implementation seems to have abruptly stalled crawling but the indexing behavior of each engine displays distinctly differing policy by each major player.

The sandbox is apparently not just Google's playground, but it is certainly tiresome after nearly two months. I think I'd like to leave for home, have some lunch and take a nap now.

Back to class before we leave for the day kiddies. What did we learn today? Watch early crawler activity and be certain to implement robots.txt early and adjust often for bad bots. Oh yes, and the sandbox belongs to all search engines.

Consumer Driven Health Plans [ CDHP ]. Three Questions People Are Asking About Health Care in America.

Do you know that skyrocketing health care costs have been draining the federal government and employer's exchequers over the last couple of years? The health care costs account for 15.5 percent of U.S GDP and is the most expensive benefit paid by employers, seriously affecting their competitiveness in the global market. Health care spending is projected to top $1.9 trillion in 2005, about twice the amount being spent on education. According to the Employment Policy Foundation, employers have spent $331 billion last year for health insurance, a 50 percent increase since 1998. All of these never-improving alarming statistics did result in designing the Consumer Driven Health Plan (CDHP), making the insured person an active member in controlling the costs, rather than being passive and relying on the managed benefit program. The idea was pioneered by Definity Health in Minnesota in the year 2000 and has seen a rapid adoption by the employers/employees over the years due to its inherent cure-for-all strategy.

CDHP ( http://www.healthinsurancedepth.com ) is all about transferring the reins of health-care costs to the participating individual, thereby making him an active and informed decision maker for his/her heath-care needs. Consumer-directed health plans (CDHPs) are typically a combination of a high-deductible medical insurance plan

coupled with an employer sponsored reimbursement account (HRA) or a health care savings (HSA) plan that consumers access to pay for eligible medical care expenses. Unutilized funds may be carried over for health care expenses for future years, encouraging the participants to use the accumulated asset in a wise manner. The plans would also include coverage for any preventive care services such as annual health-checkups, immunizations and childcare. The money from the savings plan can also be used for tax-free reimbursement of post-retirement insurance premiums. In the HRA version of the plan, the employer sets aside a pre-defined set of dollars for usage by the employee. The HRA plan is not transferable between employers. When the amount is exhausted, there is some out-of-pocket expenditure incurred by the participant. Employers are now able to control the health-care costs, and the member is encouraged to wisely utilize the money using the annual rollover feature to save for possible major future expenses.

The HSA based plan, involves contribution to a savings account on a pre-tax basis, by the employer and/or employee and is portable as the participant changes employer / plan. The member also has the flexibility to select the investment options for the savings account. In either of the plans, the participant has to pay the pre-defined level of annual deductible and the remaining expenses are reimbursed by the plan on a co-payment basis, subject to a maximum level of out-of-pocket payment. The member's incentive of maintaining the assets in the account encourages proper scrutiny of health-care related bills, costs and/or evaluation of the necessity of visits to the doctor. Inherent to the design of the plan, the participant is rewarded through increased savings by judiciously controlling his/her medical expenses.

HSA is a comparatively newer development in the insurance industry, resulting in a usual time lag of adoption by the employers. As per a recent survey conducted by America's Health Insurance Plans, 79 percent of the HSA adoptions were by individuals. Even though the number of employers offering HRAs outnumber those that offer HSAs, but in the long-run it is estimated that the latter will take over due to its simplicity and popularity among the consumers as they have more control on the accumulated medical dollars.

Another recent survey of employers conducted by Mercer Human Resource Consulting, reveals a preference of HSAs being offered by as compared to the other plan by the year 2006. According to Charles Koser, Infinisource Vice President of Business Development, 40 percent of businesses with less than 10 employees do not offer health insurance based on a recent study done by the National Federation of Independent Businesses [ NFIB ]. He further states that, HSA is a very affordable option for these employers and probably proves the point when the study also reveals that 32 percent of HSA adopters were uninsured.

Proper Communication is probably the key factor in ensuring adoption of CDHPs in an organization. According to Sara Taylor, national leader for annual enrollment at Hewitt Associates "Employers aren't going to see much enrollment in consumer-driven health plans, if it's only one option out of 15 plans....Having a choice between a consumer-driven plan and a traditional health plan is a better way to drive employee enrollment to HSAs and HRAs". Also, the initiatives must stress on building a healthier and health-care-cost-conscious workforce with cheaper access to preventive care with a CDHP. Over the next couple of years, we are probably going to see more adoptions of CDHPs by the major corporations, giving the employees direct control of the medical dollars and controlling the investment opportunities for the accumulated assets. A recent survey was conducted by Aon Consulting and International Society of Certified Employee Benefit Specialists (ISCEBS), in January and February of this year. The survey of 208 benefit managers revealed that 22 percent of the businesses offered a CDHP to their employees. To indicate that CDHP has gained significant popularity in recent years, the survey also mentions that 74 percent of the corporations offering a CDHP started doing so in 2004 and 2005, with over half that group having started in January this year.

As per a Forrester Research study, about $88 billion of insurance-premium dollars are estimated from adoption of CDHP model by 2007. With a gradual adoption of CDHP model among the employees - an organization of about 10,000 employees, incurring about $8,000 per employee annually - can save up to $10 million over a period of four years.

At the same time, consumer needs to make sure they at least get a PPO ( http://www.healthinsurancedepth.com ) style negotiated price through their health insurance carriers before they meet their deductibles - otherwise savings of the affordable health insurance may go way. More and more doctors and hospitals are getting it in writing from the patients that they will be paying usual and customary charges instead of lower PPO negotiated prices. This trend itself can make Consumer Driven Health and Medical Insurance unattractive.

People are always asking me when should I sell my stock or mutual funds?

There are some relatively easy answers to this. In fact, so simple that you won't believe them, but they are things I have learned over the past 30 years as a professional trader on the floor of the commodity exchange in Chicago. These ideas apply equally well to stocks and mutual funds and to just about any kind of investment.

First let's examine what the Wall Street mavens tell you about mutual funds. Ever heard this one? Buy a good fund and stick with it even when it is going down. WRONG! Go with a good fund manager and follow him from fund to fund. WRONG! Don't buy the current "hot" fund, as it will go down when this fad is over and you will lose your money. WRONG!

Let's look at the one basic reason all these ideas are promoted. The mutual fund industry which is the biggest owner of individual stocks in the world doesn't want you to take your money out of their particular fund so they all band together to promote the above ideas even when you are losing money. Fund managers are not paid for performance. They are paid by the amount of your money the fund keeps.

Do you want to stick with anything that is going down in value week after week? The great cry of stockbrokers is, "The market always comes back". But when? In your lifetime?

I don't know of any individual fund manager that has made money for the investors every single year. They all run hot and cold, even the best of them. You can put the best jockey on a slow horse and he is not going to win the race.

The Wall Street gurus talk about "hot money" flowing from one fund to another and want you to feel guilty just because you want to make more profit. Hey, what is your money in there for - cold pizza?

There is one basic rule that will keep you outperforming the pack. If your mutual fund is not currently (meaning in the past 12 months) outperforming the S&P500 Index you should sell it immediately and buy a different no-load fund. Don't buy any fund that charges commission. You can buy directly from the fund itself (phone numbers listed in IBD very day) or through a discount broker such as Waterhouse, Datek, E-Trade and many others. The maximum commission charge should not be more than $25 no matter the size of the buy or sell with no restrictions on how long you must hold it.

Where do you find the best performing funds? Each day Investor's Business Daily publishes a list of these funds. Look for the day they publish the top performers for the past 12 months.

Don't pay any attention to the longer-term statistics. Each week you should look to see if your fund is still listed in the top 25. If it isn't, sell it and buy the one at the top. Simple. Forget the 3-year, 5-year and 10-year records. My philosophy is 'What have you done for me lately?'.

As far as selling stock this is what I do. I keep at 10% trailing stop which I change every Monday morning with my discount broker. The open stop is 10% of the previous Friday's close. This may or may not be the top of the move but I don't care. I'm either stopped out with a small loss or a profit, but my money is always protected. When I have doubled my money I will sell half my position and let the rest ride with the following stop. Protection of your capital is the most important thing you can do.

But from the Zen point of view, struggling to find and keep love is the opposite of what is needed. First we must learn 'do nothing'. We must learn how to let go of control.

This 'do nothing' is active and vital, the very opposite of passivity. In order to understand this, we must take a step back.

We are born wanting to control our world and the people in it. We scream to get food from mother, smile to receive the attention we crave and, when our needs aren't met kick up a great fuss. As infants we feel that others are here simply to care for us and keep us content. This kind of attitude can be very hard to outgrow. In fact, it can be said that 99% of our precious life energy goes into controlling others so that our desires can be fulfilled.

What we call love in relationships is often no more than having someone who makes us feel good.

The Zen way is the opposite. We do not try to use others, control events, or demand that life fulfill our dreams. Instead, we grow aware of and accepting of all that is given, and learn to take care of the world we live in. As we do this, an odd thing happens, we become more and more fulfilled. As we grow in compassion and simplicity, all we truly need then comes naturally.

Doing Nothing

Unfortunately, the idea of 'doing nothing' has been greatly misunderstood. It does not mean be passive. Just the opposite. Do nothing is the most challenging, demanding, revolutionary instruction that can be given. It means, when faced with life's challenges - let go of control.

In order to learn how to do this in Zen meditation we are given this instruction - "Don't Move." Usually we move (and react) all the time. When something bothers us, we shift, change our position, do anything we can to fix it. Although our behavior alters the condition for a little while, it usually comes back again, sometimes more intensely, sometimes in another form. Likewise, no matter what action we take in relationships, often there is nothing that will cause the trouble to go away.

As we surrender control over the condition, we allow things to be as they are. We allow the entire world to play itself out in front of our eyes. This profound action implies an immense respect for the intrinsic nature of people and events, for a larger design in the universe, which brings our good to us, and removes that which no longer belongs.

How often we try to grasp and hold onto that which is no longer suitable, or to desperately maneuver to obtain that which may be entirely wrong. When we do not control, but rather appreciate what is happening, (or who is coming our way) we are yielding to a higher wisdom, permitting life to take its own course.

True Action
When we're in a difficult situation, most of our actions create more upset and complications. These are not truly actions, but reactions. True action is something different. It is clear, spontaneous, purposeful, direct.

In order to arrive at true action we must, first, do nothing. This means we must stop doing what we used to do, cease our knee jerk reactions, stop living like Sisyphus, rolling the same rock up the same mountain. We must be able to bear the temporary discomfort of stopping our usual ways.

As we do this, many upsets dissolve naturally. We do not fan the flames. We do not turn a summer rain into a violent thunderstorm, which can tear an entire relationship apart.

When you are faced with a difficult knot in a relationship, or when you are trying to find someone new to love - don't squirm and wrestle, don't enter into a struggle. "Do nothing" give up control. Stay centered and immovable in the middle of the storm and see what the life is truly bringing to you. Keep clear and compassionate. Let the situation unfold as it will. Don't get picked up and whirled around like a leaf in the wind.

Relax Your Grip
Zen teaches us how to relax our grip. As this happens we begin to see each person as they truly are, not as we wish or demand. We also realize that it is not an act of love, to try to change and control another. It is an act of love to discover and appreciate who they truly are.

When we let each moment, each person be exactly as they are this is the great work of doing nothing. It is the work of non-interference with the primal wisdom of the universe, which runs through all things and beings, including ourselves.

When we step back and allow this harmony to take over, our entire lives are healed and enhanced. That which is right for us comes naturally, and difficult situations find their own healing as well. When we honor and uphold life as it is given, then inevitably, life honors and upholds us.

Animal Abuse Prevention Agency : Home Page

This law, The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention & Consumer Protection Act of 2005, will go into effect on October 17, 2005 and drastically change the historical American version of bankruptcy in that creditors will be treated much more favorably than debtors. Some of the more significant (and controversial) changes include:

* Making it more difficult for individuals to receive a Chapter 7 discharge. A means test is to be imposed on would-be filers, one that is linked to whether the debtor's earnings in the six-month period prior to filing were above or below the median income for the debtor's state of residence.

* Making Chapter 13 far less attractive by, amongst other things, eliminating its "super discharge," eliminating the ability of debtors to "cram down" non-residential secured property (i.e., to disallow them from paying off the real value of the secured property as secured while treating the excess value as unsecured, by disallowing the reduction of interest charged on the debt to reasonable values), by removing the credit for payments on retained secured property from the calculation of disposable income, and by requiring that debtors undergo counselling in order to file under Chapter 13.

* Requiring that debtor counsel conducts an investigation of their clients' filings and be personally liable for them, a duty apparently unprecedented under U.S. law. A similar requirement will likely force debtors desiring to reaffirm to attend a court hearing and prove to the court that they can meet obligations they wish to reaffirm (because few debtor's attorneys will wish to certify their belief of their client's prospective ability to pay on a reaffirmed debt). Those who cannot thus prove will be compelled to surrender the property.

* Limiting the homestead protection to $125,000 in equity and establishing a 40 month residency period before such protections are recognized in Bankruptcy.

The legislation, sponsored (introduced) by the chairman of the Finance Committee, Republican Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, was supported by President George W. Bush and opposed by many Democrats and the Green Party. Although the original legislation was introduced during the Clinton Administration, and had more bi-partisan Congressional support at the time, the president vetoed it nonetheless. The bill languished for years due to disagreements in Congress as to the level of the means test, and whether anti-abortion groups could use bankruptcy to discharge fines levied against them by courts for actions that resulted in property damage or injury such as bombing abortion clinics.

Bankruptcy Fraud

Bankruptcy fraud is the a business crime of filing for bankruptcy with criminal intent, that is with the intention of evading payment for goods even though the buyer has funds that could be used to pay for them, or accepting payment for goods or services but not supplying them. Common types of bankruptcy fraud include petition mills, false oath, concealment of assets, and fraudulent conveyance. Multiple filings are not per se fraudulent; as with all things in the law, it depends on the circumstances. Bankruptcy fraud should be distinguished from strategic bankruptcy, which is not a criminal act (but may prejudice a judge against the filer if there is evidence that bankruptcy is being used strategically). In the United States, bankruptcy fraud is a federal crime. Its provisions are found at Title 18 of the United States Code. It is prosecuted by the United States Attorney, typically after a reference from the United States Trustee, the Interim Trustee, or a bankruptcy judge. Bankruptcy fraud can also sometimes lead to criminal prosecution in state courts, under the charge of theft of the goods or services obtained by the debtor for which payment, in whole or in part, was evaded by the fraudulent bankruptcy filing.

Barriers to healthy diets are placed into four broad categories:

External Barriers
Psychological Barriers
Physical Barriers
Dieting Barriers

This article examines only the most difficult barriers in each category. Let's remove the barriers to healthy diets...but first, "What is a Healthy Diet?"

What is a Healthy Diet?

A healthy diet provides the recommended daily allowance for vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Any diet that fails to meet the minimum daily allowance for any nutrient is unhealthy. Of course, providing the daily allowance for all nutrients is next to impossible given the poor nutritional value of today's diets.

We eat on average 1.5 meals a day (not even close to the suggested 5-6 meals). The one meal we manage to eat is usually late in the evening, high in calories, high in fat, and is missing Group I Foods (fresh vegetables and fruit).

The majority of young men between the ages of 20-25 eat only 2 servings of fruit and 1 serving of fresh vegetables throughout the week! The next generation is nutritionally starved.

A healthy diet is quite simple and easy to follow. Here are the steps to eating a healthy diet:

Eat 5-6 meals a day.
Every meal should have a serving of lean protein, complex carbohydrate, and unlimited amounts of Group I Foods.
Eat approximately 40-50% protein, 30-40% complex carbohydrates, and 30% fat everyday. Limit sugars, saturated fats, and trans-fatty-acids.
Maintain a slightly negative energy balance or perfectly balance it. How do you accomplish this? Read the next few steps!
Calculate your energy output everyday. Energy output is the Resting Metabolic Rate plus the number of calories burned through physical activity.
Subtract your energy output from your energy input -- the number of calories you eat a day. The result is the remaining total energy and it determines your energy balance.

If the result is a positive number, you have a Positive Energy Balance. Simply, cut back on the amount you eat.

If the result is negative, you have a Negative Energy Balance. Increase the amount you eat.
Make adjustments to energy input (the number of calories you eat a day) so that you'll remain with a slightly negative energy balance.

Some weight loss experts advocate a strong negative energy balance at baseline. In theory, this makes sense but in practice it's associated with weight regain.

I believe that energy should be balanced or slightly negative at baseline. The closer to a balanced energy state, the better the chance for avoiding weight regain and maintaining your ideal weight for a longer period of time.
Do not cut back, slow down, or stop exercising. If adjustments need to be made, it's better to make dietary changes than to make changes to your exercise plan.

A healthy diet is simple to follow. Eat fewer calories, exercise, and make dietary adjustments as needed. No pills, supplements, acupuncture, magnets, or magic minerals are needed. Just a calculator.

Removing External Barriers to Healthy Diets

Two difficult external barriers are peer pressure and time. Our friends and family influence our lives more than we like to admit. They affect our decisions, choices, moods, behavior, and weight.

During medical school, I worked in a weight loss clinic to make some money. I will never forget the level of influence a spouse or friend could have on a patient. Several times, I saw first hand someone, other than the patient, make the dieting decisions.

At this level of influence, our peer groups can make a big impact on eating a healthy diet. Just keep this influence thing in mind. OR, should I say, "Keep it in mind only if you have TIME."

Time is another rarely acknowledged external barrier to healthy diets. We live in world that seems to lose time. The normal 24 hour day feels more like 15 hours. All we do is rush from one event or appointment to the next. Eating a healthy diet is next to impossible.

Please, slow down. Who knows, by slowing down we might actually pay attention to the important things in our lives. I find that the more I rush the less I get done. And what I do finish, really isn't all that important.

Be serious about eating a healthy diet and slow down.

Removing Dieting Barriers to Healthy Diets

About two to three decades ago, while watching repeats on TV, Americans changed their diets and started eating lots of fat and processed foods. We have suffered ever since.

Eating lots of fat created a macronutrient imbalance and has clogged our arteries. Then we fell in love with processed foods. This love affair drained all of the vitamins and minerals from our bodies and resulted in a micronutrient deficiency.

Until we restore things to the pre-TV Dinner diet, we will continue to suffer heart attacks and weight gain.

It's really crazy...we stuff ourselves with heavy fat and then starve for vitamins and minerals.

Removing Physical Barriers to Healthy Diets

Physically, our lack of exercise is the greatest barrier to healthy diets. Start exercising! Walk. Jog. Swim. Lift weights. Sweat. Move. Breath. Live.

Throughout the USA, so many of us are in a giving mood. Natural disasters, particularly Hurricane Katrina, has brought out the best in all of us. Clothes, food, money, and so much more is being donated and at a pace never seen before in our nation's history. The recipients are needy as many have lost all that they have. In the midst of this special season of giving please remember that others need your help too.

After the 2001 terrorist attacks, Americans gave large sums of monies to agencies helping out survivors and relatives of those who were killed. Demonstrably, Americans put action to their words and contributed untold millions to the relief effort. Without this special assistance, the recovery effort would have been in vain. Thankfully, so many hearts were touched and people who needed help received it.

One aftermath of the terrorist attacks that received limited press coverage was the financial impact the attacks had on other organizations. While funds flowed with ease to organizations tasked with assisting survivors and family members, quite a number of nonprofit organizations across the USA suffered. The flip side of giving to one organization often means that other organizations go without. It was reported that several organizations experienced some very hard months after September 11th as anticipated donations were diverted to other organizations. Food shelters, animal relief organizations, cancer recovery groups, and so many others reported a sharp drop in giving which greatly impacted these organizations' ability to do their work. The unexpected result was that some salaried staff members had hours cut back or were let go, while in other cases projects were curtailed or halted altogether.

Of course, I am not saying to hold back your funds for the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. Instead, and I know we all have limited means, plan on continuing to give to other organizations as much as you are able to do so. Many have fall fund raising drives that must go on, so please help these organizations by giving according to what you are able to give.

To creatively solve problems you need to get your mind looking in new directions. You can systematically do this by using a list of words, primarily adjectives, to create "what if?" scenarios. You start with the question, "what if it was..." and then insert a word from the list. The "it" in the question is the problem you're trying to solve, or the solution or situation that exists now.

Using "What If" To Solve Problems

An example will help explain the process. Assume your house is too crowded because you're running your business from it. You ask, "What if it was..." and insert from the word list, "smaller." The house is already too small, but could the business be smaller? The word "divided" might give you the idea to keep the business in just one part of the house.

Most words on the list won't help, so you can go through the irrelevant ones quickly. Don't automatically dismiss them, though, without a few seconds consideration. "What if it was hopeless?" may seem like a useless question, or it may make you realize that you just can't keep the business in the house any longer.

As with most problem-solving techniques, it's important to allow ideas to flow without judging them initially. Don't stifle the creative process. Evaluate your ideas later, when you're done with this part.

The Problem Solving Word List

You can create your own list of words. Use adjectives, descriptive phrases, and words that can change your perspective. These could include the following:

What if it was... larger, smaller, farther away, closer, sooner, later, easier, more difficult, higher, fat, rich, short, black, certain, hopeless, newer, boring, casual, subtracted from, cheaper, common, divided, more interesting, extravagant, subtle, or fun?

The "arraignment" process involves:

Being brought before a Judge in the courtroom
Receiving the " criminal complaint" with the crimes charged and the factual basis to each charge
The District Attorney requesting bail or releasing you on your own recognizance (called "ROR")
Pleading guilty or not guilty

The process starts when the court officer brings you from the cell in the back of the courtroom and into the courtroom before the Judge.

If you were unable to contact your family, friends or an attorney when you were arrested then most likely the court will have a Legal Aid attorney appear for you. Legal Aid attorneys are in the courtroom at all times to defend the poor, and most times to appear for the unrepresented.

Usually there will be about three attorneys from the District Attorney's office in the courtroom. One of them will read the charges against you and request the court to impose bail at a certain amount or no bail. If no bail is demanded by the District Attorney then you will hear the word "ROR", which means "return on your own recognizance".

Bail is determined according to the crime and your personal information. At arraignment the District Attorney will have your personal information obtained from their computer searches on you. They call this your " rap sheet". It will include information about you, such as:

Any Prior convictions
Any arrests at anytime
Any pleas to prior arrests
Parole
Probation

If your rap sheet is clear of any crimes and this is your first arrest, chances are good that there will be no bail set against you. But even if your rap sheet is clear, if the crime you're charged with is serious (such as involving a large amount of stolen money or violence), bail can be set against you. There are different factors affecting the setting of bail against you, and all are considered by the judge in a matter of minutes.

If the District Attorney requests bail, your attorney should argue that:

You're not a flight risk
You have family, friends and a job in the state or locally
The charges against you are improper in some way.

Your attorney may even get the whole case dismissed if the District Attorney's criminal complaint against you is not properly drafted or signed by a proper party.

Getting The Complaint Dismissed At Arraignment

The District Attorney drafts the criminal complaint against you from information received from the arresting officer and the victim of the crime. While you're being processed through the Precinct and Central Booking, the arresting officer will fax his paperwork and information regarding your arrest and charges to the District Attorney's office. Someone in the District Attorney's office will then call the victim and get more information so they can properly draft the complaint.

The complaint needs to be signed under oath by the arresting officer or the victim. If it is not signed by anyone when you appear at your arraignment then it is not "corroborated" and must be dismissed. So check out who signed the complaint: if it was a person other than the arresting officer or the victim then the complaint should be dismissed.

Lastly, if the facts of the complaint do not establish each legal element of the crime charged, or the complaint is poorly drafted then it should be dismissed however, the court usually will give the District Attorney a few weeks to file a properly drafted complaint.

Background checks and pre-employment assessments are effective tools for discovering one's use of drugs or propensity to steal. The Federal Chamber of Commerce has identified employee theft as the number one reason for business failure, accounting for a full third of all bankruptcies.

One last word on background checks, do not assume that if you do not do them at all that you will be exempt from prosecution, the courts are clear that employers have the responsibility to do whatever is at their disposal to create a safe and healthy work environment.

Mistake #5 - Thinking diversity is a black and white issue

There is much talk about the need for diversity in the workplace. Certainly the more diverse an organization, the better it is equipped to face the challenges of the marketplace. However, many hiring professionals take the view that diversity is limited to religion or gender. Actually there are more than thirty different criteria important to creating the best working environment for teamwork, creativity, harmony, productivity, and cohesiveness. These include age, affluence, geography, union affiliation, experience, habits, and much more. When an organization recognizes and hires based on all the elements of diversity, they increase their effectiveness and competitiveness.

Mistake #4 - Ignoring corporate culture

Although every organization has a culture that is distinct and unique, most cultures can be described as either traditional or contemporary. In a traditional environment, workers are managed with tight controls while contemporary organizations place more emphasis on employees making decisions at the lowest levels possible. One requires workers that appreciate controls and direction while the other finds initiative and self-starting to be critical. The essence of the applicant, which accounts for a full 90% of the total person, cannot be detected by even the best of interviewers. These key aspects of the applicant include the job fit, occupational interests, behavioral traits, and thinking style - all essential in determining if the individual will fit the culture and management style in which the new hire will work.

Mistake #2 - Thinking the new person will be better than the last

A common misconception held by many managers is the belief that replacing a below-par employee will somehow produce a better employee. The theory is flawed because the problem with the problem employee is not usually the employee. Think about a time when a problem employee was terminated. The general thought was the new person would be better. Six months later the manager is back requesting the dismissal of this new employee. In working with thousands of employees over my thirty plus year career, I have found that virtually all problem employees are the product of a particular situation, company culture, or the manager's style. The problem employee is actually a symptom of this problem. Unless the problem is addressed, the replacement will eventually become another problem employee.

Mistake #1 - Focusing retention programs only on existing employees.

Employee retention programs are typically designed for existing employees. Employers with the highest retention programs are those that see employee retention as a process that begins in the early stages of a job search.

Even the best sales organizations miss this one. They know the importance of the first impression to a business prospect, but they forget the importance of the first impression they make on a candidate.

Many high-retention employers begin to "sell" themselves as an outstanding employer and a great place at which to work in their job posting. In doing so, they are creating an atmosphere where employees buy into the concept that they have made an excellent career choice from their first contact with a company. These companies confirm the early impression with special recruitment packets, clearly identified interviewing processes, and special recognition to the strongest candidates. In short, they mimic the methods used by high performance sales professionals to woo and retain customers.

Choose "impossible" goals

When faced with a hard-to-reach goal, your best strategy may be to shoot even higher. Of course, despite all your creativity, it might not work. You may never hit 50 sales. But, at the very least, with your new strategies, high-level targeting and newly generated enthusiasm, you're more or less guaranteed to hit the previous ceiling of 30 sales without batting an eye.

Lately, I have been happily attracting leads for my Internet marketing products and services from a wide range of sources including search engine advertising, online classified ads and even an eBay campaign. But am I spending too much? What is a lead worth anyway?

I figured I had better find out! Otherwise I could be spending more money than a lead is actually worth to me.

Here is the process I went through to determine how much I should pay for a lead..

1. Defining what a lead is for you.
There are different definitions of leads in different industries. For myself, I defined a lead as someone who actually visited my web site and signed up for either a free e-book or my newsletter. This way, I know they are interested in the kind of help I offer. They have seen MY web site and they have freely given me their e-mail address to stay in touch.

If you are buying lead lists from someone, the value is much less because the people haven't heard of you, they have just opted in to someone else's list.

2. Tracking your leads.
It is critical that you are tracking your advertising to see how much of it is resulting in leads and sales. I dump 95% of all Internet advertising I try after the first month because my tracking tells me it doesn't work!

Without the ad tracking, I would never know which campaigns were working and I would be wasting 95% of my marketing dollars.

The ad tracking service I use is called 1ShoppingCart. They offer unlimited ad tracking and auto responders.

3. How many leads does it take to generate a customer?
Not everyone who signs up for a free e-book or a newsletter becomes a customer. If only 1 in 100 of your signups become customers, you need to take this into account when you are valuing your lead. In my case, I feel 1 in 25 signups become a customer at some level.

4. What is each customer worth?
How much does your average customer spend with you? At first, I found this difficult to calculate because my customers range from a $9 e-book to $1,000s of dollars each year in coaching. In addition, I receive passive and residual income from my customers which comes from their use of products and services I recommend. But then I looked at my accounting program and simply took my total income for the year and divided it by the number of clients. This showed me that my average client spent $259 in 2004.

5. Calculating the value of your leads.
Here is the formula to calculate the value of your leads:

Value per lead = value per customer �½ number of leads needed to generate 1 customer.

In my case, my accounting program for 2004 showed an average expenditure per customer of $259. In my own case, I believe that 1 out of every 25 signups will result in a sale.

Value per lead = $259 �½ $25 = $10.36

In my case, each lead I generate should bring me $10.36 in sales.

5. What about profitability?
If I spend $10 to generate $10 in sales, I don't make any profit and I haven't covered my costs of operating.

If I assume that I currently make $5 profit on a $10 sale, I might want to set a target of paying a maximum per lead of $2. This way, on a $10 sale, my total cost including the cost of the lead plus the cost of the product is $7, leaving me a $3 profit.

In my case, my actual costs in 2004 were only 37% of my sales, so I could afford to pay even more, but the $2 target seems a good one for me to work with. Fortunately, it is easy for me to generate all the leads I need for less than $2 each through the various types of advertising available.

Sport encourages the integration of the whole organism because it is necessary to think as we move and plan ahead. In performing each movement in response to the run of play, we use mechanisms that nature evolved for the purpose of survival in a hostile world. Sport is today's equivalent of the hunting, fighting and avoidance of predators that kept our ancestors alive. The skills developed in our past are essential in today's sport; accuracy, speed, strength and intelligence are all requirements for success.

We have come to believe that the stronger a muscle the better, without a thought to what we actually do with a stronger muscle. I am not advocating we should do nothing, or that all exercise is harmful. The important issue is why we exercise and what is it we hope to achieve? If we want to get fit, ask the question - fit for what? When did you last review your objectives for devoting so much time and effort to its pursuit?

To help achieve optimum performance it is useful to understand the physiology involved so you do not misuse your body. All movement, even of the smallest part, involves the total organism yet many exercise systems fail to recognise the integral nature of human function. Exercises have always been designed to achieve specific improvements for one part of the body in the belief it will benefit the athlete for the particular demands of their sport. My view is that the concentration on individual parts whilst performing these exercises destroys the unity of the organism necessary for good movement.

Getting into shape usually involves a trip to the local gymnasium with its staggering array of equipment. A combination of technology and clever marketing has transformed the dull exercise machine into an essential piece of equipment capable of &achieving miracles'. Today's machines have made it possible to work individual muscles in isolation - the first-time gym user will often joke they ache in muscles they did not know existed. Unfortunately, in the rush to develop the ultimate range of equipment, I believe a vital factor in human development and movement has been overlooked. That is, no single movement involves either an individual or isolated set of muscles! Machines that work a muscle whilst immobilising or supporting part of the body, encourage &unnatural' actions never to be repeated outside the gymnasium, sports scientist Dr Mel Siff wrote: -

"....it is well known in physiology that the body knows of actions, not muscles, so that it is inappropriate to place any intentional stress on individual muscles rather than on the desired motor patterns."

Even the harmless looking treadmill does not replicate natural activity. Running on a moving surface employs a different combination of muscles when compared with road running.

Chuck Wolf, the director of sport science and human performance for the U.S.A. Triathlon National Training Center in Florida acknowledges this problem with the exercise machine saying,

"... our love of machines has caused us to lose sight of the way the body functions. Machines are ideal for multiple repetitions of the same movement patterns along a single plane. Unfortunately, that's not how we move."

Too much emphasis is placed on muscle and hence exercises to improve strength at the cost of neglecting the systems that control them. Complex machines are able to analyse the strength of individual muscles in specific movements. However, these machines do not measure the body during natural activity. Problems are then identified with the suspect muscle and exercises prescribed to correct the condition. But what causes the weakness initially? Why is a muscle weak or too tight? A muscle can only do what it is told to do and as we do not have the ability to directly control a muscle we cannot be certain of what we are actually telling it to do. The &offending' muscle is only performing its function as directed by the controlling mechanisms for which we ultimately carry the responsibility. When the police stop a speeding motorist they prosecute the driver not the car!

This is not to say that gymnasiums are harmful - far from it! It is how we approach the use of a gym's equipment that is vital. They do offer an opportunity to develop body awareness and strength but the temptation is to focus on the specific muscle being exercised whilst ignoring how the whole body can be used. For example, it is common to see people gritting teeth, straining neck muscles and arching their back when using machines to work the biceps. All this unnecessary action is not going to help build the biceps but it will develop poor muscular habits that will affect other activities. If used with the total body in mind these exercises will develop every other muscle appropriately as they are needed to stabilise the frame. So rather than looking to build the abs, biceps and quads separately, be aware of their involvement on every machine.

More recently other gadgets have started to appear on the market that promise to improve balance and proprioception (our ability to sense the position, location and movement of the body and its parts).

But do these devices really help to improve performance in your sport? Or do you just acquire a new skill such as balancing on a swiss-ball that may be fun but does nothing to help your game? Bill Hartman, sports scientist and golf coach, writes

"So what can you do to improve your golf-specific balance? Play golf. There is not a gadget or exercise which will improve your golf-specific balance like playing golf. Why? Because nothing can duplicate the demands of playing golf other than playing golf. I know, it sounds silly doesn't it. If you look at other athletes in any sport from martial arts to gymnastics to hockey, you'll find that they simply perform their sporting skills over and over to acquire their amazing balance skills. They don't rely on silly, useless gadgets. If you were a tightrope walker, would you practice on a wooden beam or stand on a stability ball. Of course not, because it would not duplicate the demands of tightrope walking. The rope has its own "feel" and sway that nothing else but a tightrope can duplicate. So if you want to improve your golf-specific balance, play golf."

So perhaps to get the best from the gymnasium we should take our time to use the machines with total awareness of the actions involved (avoiding distractions such as the gym TV or listen to music ). And perhaps ask whether the action encouraged by the machine is a 'natural' one. Will I ever be hanging at an angle where I need to perform a sit-up? It may strengthen the abdominals for that movement, but do I need it? How will it benefit my body as a whole?

Nearly a quarter of American adults just got diagnosed with a new disorder: pre-hypertension. Is your blood pressure low enough?

Nearly 23% of people over the age of 18 have pre-hypertension (blood pressure over 120/80 and less than 140/90). Another 25% of those over 18 have full-blown hypertension (blood pressure over 140/90).

Hypertension

At age 34 I had to have an insurance exam. I weighed 175 pounds on a 5'6" frame and for the first time in my life, had elevated blood pressure, 140/90, up from 118/78. That was one of the first major health warnings my body gave me.

Pre-hypertension

Back in those days hypertension was considered anything above 140/90. Today we have the diagnosis of "pre-hypertension" which is any elevation of blood pressure over 120/80. Starting as low as 115/75 the risk of heart attack or stroke doubles for every 20 point increase in systolic pressure (the higher of the two, when the left ventricle of the heart actually pumps blood out into the body) and for every 10 point increase in diastolic pressure (when the heart is resting in between pulses). Between the pressures of 120/80 and 140/90 there is a fourfold increase in heart attack, compared to people with normal blood pressure. According to Aram Chobanian, M.D. Dean of Boston University School of Medicine, people over 54 years old have a 90% chance of developing hypertension at some time.

Aging does not necessarily correlate to hypertension.

For some reason especially here in America, there has been the idea that there is a normal increase in blood pressure as one gets older. That has been proven to be false. There are many populations around the world that reach old age and beyond without any increase in blood pressure. The idea that blood pressure goes up with age is based on studying the American population where it does in most cases. However, this does not mean that it is normal and is most likely a reflection of the eating habits and lifestyle of most Americans. I can still remember when a serum cholesterol was considered normal if it was less than 275, hardly normal for anyone.

Prevention is the best approach.

Better to not get hypertension than to try to control it with drugs once you have it. This means lifestyle changes that to some, are not really what they want to do. No free lunch here. If you want to prevent hypertension or control it once you have it, diet and exercise are the answer. Below are twelve simple lifestyle changes you can make to help keep your blood pressure under control.

Lose Weight

Exercise

Drinks lots of water

You get a flash of inspiration and an interesting topic for an article comes into your head. Here we go then!

You write the article, and even come up with a 'catchy' title. You post the article on your web site, and even add a link to a product you might sell as an affiliate.

Then you wait for the search engines to bring people to that page... and you wait, and wait. So what's wrong with this scenario?

Your jazzy title has no popular keyword built in. It is too long and will never be searched on in it's entirety, as most key phrases are no longer that 2 or 3 words.

The body of your article probably has no good keywords either, because no one is reaching you from the Search engines.

And if you post your new article to the submission sites to bring you more new traffic, what happens? The same thing.. absolutely nothing! Why.. No popular keywords built into your article.

In other words, your article doesn't get read unless found by browsers who just happen to run into it on your site, or in the article directory where you posted the article. You miss out on all the free traffic provided by search engines.

So what can we do to get that missing traffic back?

The only solution is to write your article with appropriate keywords that get searched on.

Let's review where the keywords should be placed in your article.

You need to select the main keyword that matches the theme of your article and placed in these areas:

The Title.
It's really best if your the keyword is part of the title, even if not the complete title. Keywords or key phrases should not be more than 2 or 3 words, and a maximum of 4 words. Your title should be up to 10 words, or even more, if it's to be creative and attract readers.

The Page Name where your article is located on your site.

The Description.
This should start with the same text as the title. Then you can add additional sentences describing the theme of your article. The description is what appears in the search results, so use it to promote your article.

The Header, or Headline. Again, this can be the same as the title.

In the Keyword box
first enter your main keyword followed by a comma. Then add more keywords you plan to use in the article, each followed by a comma.

In the body of the article.
Try to use the keyword in the first 90 characters of your article. Then repeat it 2 to 5 times throughout but not more. Too much is frowned upon by the SE's. It also will not fool intelligent readers, who will reject your work as too obviously sounding like a scam.

Now here is the toughest part, yet the most essential for search engine success. Weave other related keywords into your article as you write it, or when you edit it. This is the Key to more SE hits to your article.. having good keywords placed throughout the article. It's actually better to write your article in your own fashion first. Then go over it and work on the keywords.

It is more important here, than in the keyword box, as the SE's will index your article with the popular keywords you used in the body of your article. I believe they now pay less attention to the keyword box.

Now your next challenge to success is to know how to find the keywords. As I said at the beginning, many, if not most of the titles are written to catch your eye, but have not used good keywords.

Why? Simply because the author did not take the time to check on the popularity of his keywords. If you don't use some that are regularly searched upon, then you will have no visitors finding your article, and your web site.

Your logical course of action is to use a Keyword Research Tool. You simply enter your main keyword you are thinking of using, and you quickly see whether your choice is good or not. Keep trying different choices until you click on the best prospect. Related keywords will also be shown if using the right tool. These are the ones to choose from, and sprinkle 4 or 5 best choices into your article.

I have a very important question. My wife moved out of the house last year with our young son and daughter. We have done some excellent counseling and made excellent progress. She actually moved back home two weeks ago. You can't believe the relief.

We broke up because of my controlling personality, but there were no financial or drug problems, nothing of that sort. I am a physician. We had a stable home and job for 15 years. I think she just got tired of not being heard and appreciated.

I believe I have made many important changes for myself and her.

There may not be an answer to my question, but how long does it take for things to be okay again once a couple reunite? Days or months or years? I am a patient soul, but life is quite short. I guess I am asking, what does it take to soften a hardened heart and how long?

We've all experienced it-computerized technology that doesn't function properly. PCs that crash on Monday morning, copiers that melt transparencies, printers that smear ink on Board reports, phones that crackle during crisis calls, Internet viruses that destroy everything but non-essential data, faxes that send documents to the wrong long distance number, and so forth. The list is nearly endless.

Many strategies exist to help you deal with difficult or even "impossible" work situations, including those in which technology seems to have gone awry. Here I present some of the basic principles of psychological self-defense-in particular, mental reframing-to arm you with cognitive tools necessary to live a peaceful coexistence with computerized gadgetry.

Central to the psychological self-help methods presented in this report is the philosophy of First Century C.E. Greek philosopher, Epictetus. According to the ancient Roman and Greek Stoics, it's not the world that causes you problems; instead, it's how you look at the world. Even William Shakespeare in Hamlet wrote, "For there is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so." In other words, life's difficulties aren't caused by various "externals"-like bosses, spouses, and malfunctioning "thingamajigs"-but rather by how you evaluate these.

Let's review how thinking affects life. According to cognitive-behavioral theory (which is an area of psychology concerned with why people think and act the way they do), beliefs, life events, and reactions all interact and affect one another. Of special note is the direct influence that beliefs (thoughts, evaluations, assessments) have on emotions and behaviors. From the perspective

of this "Event-Belief-Reaction" model, it's your interpretations of situations and people that cause you to feel and act the way you do-not the situations or people themselves. For example, the woman who continually believes and tells herself she can't figure out PCs, soon gets upset about it, berates herself, and then feels like a failure. The more she engages in negative thinking, the more she believes and tells herself she just can't do it, gets depressed about it, and so on-all of this reinforcing and perpetuating a vicious cycle of frustration, self-pity, and self-defeat.

Also important to keep in mind here is that most of our daily hassles and disappointments come from demanding rather than preferring modes of thinking. People who feel angry, anxious, nervous, irritated, or guilty don't just desire or prefer something, they usually require, demand, and dictate that they get what they want. As an example, a man might demand that his office computer work perfectly all the time, so he becomes hostile when it doesn't. Or he might dictate that everything at work be easy and trouble-free, and browbeat himself when the job gets rough.

Indeed, most of the time when people are upset, they're telling themselves that something is awful or terrible rather than simply inconvenient. Psychologists refer to this process as awfulizing or catastrophizing. Put another way, the catastrophizer might decide he's a failure because he's imperfect. Or she might conclude that work is a disaster when electronic gizmos don't function the way she wants.

a person believes something in life is disastrous or horrible instead of simply unpleasant or unfortunate, he or she has probably drawn a number of false conclusions, such as:

�½ The situation, which is totally bad, makes me utterly miserable.
�½ The condition shouldn't exist because I don't like it.
�½ I can't tolerate the predicament for one minute longer.
�½ I have to find a perfect solution to and fix the situation, or else I'm a defective person and a technological washout.

Yes, people engage in many types of nonsensical thinking. Such distorted beliefs are often termed crazy-makers, nonsensical notions, irrational beliefs, cognitive distortions, negative automatic thoughts, negative self-talk, and so forth-depending on the author. Here are some of my favorite categories of crazy-makers collected from the writings of various psychological experts:

1. All-or-nothing thinking: Seeing all of life in "black-or-white" terms.

2. Accusing: Blaming others without the necessary evidence.

3. Emotional reasoning: Assuming one's emotional state reflects the way things really are.

4. Personalizing: Blaming oneself for some negative event.

5. I-Can't-Take-It-Another-Minute-itis (very low frustration tolerance): Easily becoming frustrated when wants aren't met.

6. Damnation (negativizing): Being excessively critical of self, others, and the world.

7. Perfectionism: Requiring that everyone and everything in the universe be flawless and without blemish.

8. Mental filtering: Focusing on specific details at the expense of other important details within a situation.

9. Mind reading (fortune telling): Presuming to know what others think, feel, or plan to do.

10. Overgeneralizing: Using words like never and always; applying the characteristics of one member to an entire group.

11. Minimizing (downplaying the positive): De-emphasizing one's positive characteristics and accomplishments.

12. Magnifying (upplaying the negative; catastrophizing): Overstating the negative aspects of a situation.

13. Jumping to conclusions: Drawing conclusions about people and events without the necessary evidence.

Nonsensical thinking can also take the form of numerous cognitive blocks that interfere with healthy and rational living. Cognitive blocks often begin with words like, "What if...?" "Oh no...!" "I can't...!" or "How awful...!"

Here are a few possible cognitive blocks of frustrated techno-phobes:

�½ I can't ever make a typing mistake! What would my boss (or employees, coworkers) think?

�½ Drat... the network is down again. It just can't be my fault!

�½ Oh no, what if the copier breaks down again when I'm on a deadline? That would be dreadful!

Having identified some of the primary causes of emotional distress, let's now turn our attention to the means of changing, or reframing, life's problems by modifying our thoughts.

First, to overcome your nonsensical thinking, you accept the fact that you're a fallible human being. By embracing your humanity, you lay the foundation for overcoming your useless pessimism.

Second, you quit demanding and complaining about not getting what you want. You let go of the shoulds, oughts, musts, and needs. Only then can you adopt the more realistic perspective of preferring and accepting.

Third, you take away the horribleness and terribleness from the things in life that bother you, and acknowledge that nothing is, in fact, more than unfortunate or inconvenient.

Finally, you admit that problems, conflicts, and upsets are really opportunities for personal growth, not defeat! In other words, you decide that you can tolerate virtually anything-once you take control of your thinking.

This entire process of challenging and eliminating irrationalities is referred to as cognitive reframing, which involves two essential steps. The first step is identifying your crazy-makers, and the second is disputing and challenging your beliefs, after which you replace them with new, rational beliefs. Disputes often look like this:

�½ Where's the rule that says...?
�½ What proof do I have that...?
�½ Who says...?
�½ Who cares if...?
�½ What's the probability that...?
�½ What's the worst thing that would happen if...?
�½ Why do I need to...?
�½ So what if...?

The modern world has certainly provided us with many devices to help make our lives easier-at least in theory. But with all benefits come costs. And if you've ever stared at a "tilting" photocopier when you absolutely, positively, and without a doubt need to make an immediate copy, then you know what I mean.

So let's examine some crazy-makers and disputes for a typical person who lets himself get really annoyed, for example, when he can't make his email program work. Try these beliefs on for size:

�½ My email mustn't do anything to frustrate me, because that will be disastrous, and I will hate work and life in general.

�½ I must be free to do whatever I want easily whenever and wherever I wish; otherwise, life is unbearable and I can't be happy at all.

�½ It's horrible if people think I'm dumb or disapprove when I can't figure my email program out. If they dislike me, then their disapproval is intolerable. And it's always catastrophic if people think less of me.

�½ My self-esteem is completely tied up in my technology. If it doesn't work flawlessly, then I'm automatically inadequate and worthless.

And now for some sample disputes and sensible answers:

�½ Where's the law that says I mustn't ever be frustrated?

�½ It's inconvenient if I can't get what I want, or if people treat me badly, but it certainly isn't terrible. I can stand it, just as I've done many times in the past. No matter how poorly my email functions or other people act, I can still keep my cool and accept myself the way I am.

�½ Sometimes life stinks! But that's no reason for me to get upset about it. Tomorrow always brings a new day.

�½ Who says people have to like me, accept me, or praise me? What counts is the fact I feel comfortable with myself and my abilities.

1. First, you identify your crazy-makers, such as:

�½ I must keep up with, purchase, and master the latest version of everything-computer processors, software, wireless contraptions, universal remotes, etc.

�½ I must always be 100% in control of the technology in my life.

2. Next, you consider how demanding musts inevitably lead to catastrophizing:

�½ If I don't like gadgets, it'd be horrible.

�½ If I don't keep up with, purchase, and master the latest version of everything, I'll look stupid in front of my boss (coworkers, employees).

�½ If I don't always control the technology in my life, then I'm a failure and an awful person.

... and how demanding leads to the experience of low frustration tolerance:

�½ If life is horrible and I'm a failure and a goof as a person, then I won't be able to stand it.

3. Third, you come up with disputes that challenge your nonsensical thinking:

�½ So what if I don't like gadgets? What's so horrible about that?

�½ Why do I always need to master everything? If for some reason I don't, why does that mean I'll look stupid?

�½ Where's the rule that says if I don't control the technology in my life then I'm a failure and a goof?

4. And finally you devise some sensible answers to your disputes:

�½ It's inconvenient if I don't like or get along with my gadgets, but it isn't horrible.

�½ It may be uncomfortable when I don't always own and master everything I want, but that doesn't mean I'll look stupid.

�½ It's unfortunate if I can't control my technology, but there isn't any rule that says I'm a failure because of this.

From these sample crazy-makers and sensible answers, we see that seemingly devastating scenarios aren't necessarily so when facts are separated from irrational fears and assumptions.

Of course, psychological self-defense techniques like the ones just described are only techniques. To find true and lasting happiness with computerized technology, you'll want to work at changing your irrational thinking patterns into rational ones. This means you'll also want to practice, practice, practice! Why? Because when you practice a new activity, you effectively train it into your nervous system.

I'm sure you've learned to type on a keyboard or play a musical instrument. When you first begin to learn a new skill, it all seems very awkward. Your hands don't want to do what your head tells them to do. Every motion requires considerable conscious thought and effort to execute, and you can quickly become discouraged. However, after many, many hours of practice, the new skill becomes more automatic, so that you no longer need to concentrate so intensely.

When I first started exploring the world of dreams I fell upon Edgar Cayce (1877 -1945). Cayce was known as the "sleeping prophet" because of his ability to decipher individuals dreams while in a trance state. He had a seventh grade eduation, was a seer, a clairvoyant and is well-known for predicting such events as the World Wars and the Great Depression. I studied and used his methods for quite some time and they were my starting point into the world of dreams. Later, I became fascinated with the complex works of Carl G. Jung (1875 - 1961) which, for me, took the meaning of dreams to entirely new and exciting levels. His ideas about how dreams are the gateway to the individuation process motivated me to look deeper into their meanings and to hold them in a special place.

If you decide to start your journey with Edgar Cayce you will find that he offered techniques for deciphering dreams. Carl Jung, on the otherhand, does not offer a set method of interpretation. Either way, once you start paying attention to your dreams you will undoubtly come upon your own unique method of deciphering them.

The first thing you should do is start writing down your dreams. It does not matter whether you remember bits and pieces or whole chunks of information, each part is important and none should be discarded.

You may also want to invest in a dream interpretation book but always keep in mind that your own interpretation of an image is just as relevant.

1. Dream - "I am driving a car down a bumpy road. Before me are two tunnels and I have to choose which one to enter. I choose the right tunnel."

2. Replacement - "I am driving a (journey) down a (challenging) (path). Before me are (choices, conflict) (paths) and I have to choose which one to enter. I choose the (consciousness) (path).

3. Interpretation - From the above you can decipher that you are being asked to make a decision which up to this point has been challenging for you to get to. But you have made it. You must choose and your choice was consciouness. This means you have chosen to become aware of a certain aspect of yourself, your life or situation, knowledge etc. The next step would be to find out what's at the other end of the tunnel. That will be revealed in the next dream :)

The more you tackle your dreams the more intuitive you will become about what they mean.

Now you need to figure out who you should spy on first. Begin with the most successful websites. How do you find them? It's easy with a couple tools.

The Google toolbar (toolbar.google.com) is essential for spying. The Google toolbar features a little bar labeled "PageRank." Depending on each site, this bar may be gray, white, or (usually) a combination of green and white. The more green, the higher Google ranks that page. To get an exact PageRank, put your cursor over the PageRank graph and hold it there. Your competitors with the highest PageRank are the ones you want to look at very closely.

You also want to spy on the competitors with the most traffic. To figure out the relative traffic position of your competition (compared to all web sites), go to alexa.com and download their toolbar. The Alexa toolbar will display a number for each website �½ it?s traffic rank. The lower the number, the higher the traffic. (For example, Yahoo?s Alexa rank is 1, while Blockbuster?s is 2,220.)

Snoop through your competitor's log files to see which sites and search terms send them the most traffic. Is there a public stats tracker on your competitor's site? If so, check it out. If not, try typing in your competitor's URL with /stats.html and /stats/ on the end of it. Often times, web hosts put statistics here - without password protection. Still can't find your competitor's stats? Try Googling their URL and "statistics." It's a long shot, but sometimes statistics pages will turn up this way.

Step three: Look at who is linking to your competitor. The easiest way to do this is to run a backward link search in Google and Altavista. Simply type in link:http://www.yourcompetition.com (using your competitor's URL). You'll find most of the pages that link to your competitor this way. How do you know which links are the best? By using the Google toolbar. The pages linking to your competitor with the highest PageRank are the ones you should look to for links of your own.

To steal those links, email all the webmasters that are linking to your competitor without getting a link back in return. Figure out why they link to your competitor (good free content, subject fits site, etc), and give them a better reason to link to you. Chances are, most of these webmasters will give you a link as well.

Once you have these new sites linking to yours, positive changes in your Google ranking are likely. You may even overtake your competitor for your targeted search terms �½ especially if you get links from spying on multiple sites. All from a little reconnaissance work and some emailing!
